A recent story in the UK press highlighted the increased risk posed to home security during the winter months.
A police summit brought together senior officers to discuss tactics to curb the seasonal rise in burglaries. Borough Commander for Barking and Dagenham, Chief Superintendent Andy Ewing, led the project, dubbed Operation Bumblebee.
Detective inspectors discussed what has and has not worked well in their respective East End boroughs and formulated a plan of action to roll out to challenge burglary head on.
Offences in the region increased by almost a third between November last year and February this year.
Supt Ewing said: “Homeowners become more vulnerable to burglars during the winter months. “Halloween, Eid, Diwali, firework night and the approach of Christmas all provide burglars with opportunities to steal local people’s treasured possessions.”

Why are burglaries more common during the winter?
The Thames Valley police department has attempted to shed some light on this through the following statement on their website.
“Traditionally burglary rates increase during the winter months following the clocks going back in October. It is presumed that this is due to homes clearly appearing unoccupied as they are left in darkness whilst people are out.”

Associated insurance costs
The Halifax have revealed figures associated with winter insurance claims which relate specifically to burglary and these figures certainly appear to confirm the heightened threatened threat which Britons face during the autumn and winter months.
The group said the average cost attached to a burglary-related insurance claim hit £1,746 during the winter of 2012. That was 14% higher than the typical cost of a summer burglary claim.
